So let me start by introducing myself, my name is Gordon Beeby, I am the owner of Additions Building Company and have been building patios for over 40 years. It’s safe to say that I know everything there is to know about patios especially when it comes to building a patio that is going to suit the style and the shape of your home.
I know that adding an addition to your house is not a decision that is made lightly so let me run you through the things you want to look for in a patio company, the different shapes that patios come in and the different products you can build your patio in.
What Do I look for in a patio company?
The patio market in Queensland is booming because more and more people want to take their lifestyle outdoors without costing them the earth. There are allot of patio companies out there so it is about finding a company that not only has the experience and qualifications but also builds a style of patio that you like and understands your vision.
If the area where you want to put your patio is an unusual shape then you are going to want a company that custom designs everything they build, you’re going to want company that looks like they have experience in all designs and styles of patios.
This goes for all types of patios, if you like the idea of an elevated ceiling then you are going to want a company who looks like they specialise in fly over, insulated patios.
My advice to customers is to look at the company’s website and to take the time to look at their photo gallery. There is no point calling a company out to do a quote only to find out they build a cheap and nasty patio in none of the materials that you like.

As I said earlier, patios can come in all different shapes and sizes but here are the technical terms so you will know exactly what you are asking for;

There are really only two types of roofing you want to be asking for, v-line single skin or insulated. The days of corrugated roof sheets have been and gone when it comes to patios as corro cannot span a great enough distance without having beams all over the place to support it.

Keeping your gutters free from debris can prevent your patio gutters from overflowing and can stop water from leaking into your ceiling cavity. Dried out leaf litter can also be a fire hazard. Keeping your gutters clean can save you allot of heartache and money in the long run.
If you are finding your gutters appear to be overflowing and excess amounts of rain are making their way onto you patio or you have issues with your house leaking internally, don’t call a professional just yet. Step1 . Prepare your equipment
When working with ladders, you must be very conscience of your safety. Before beginning cleaning your gutters always take note of any power lines.
Another optional piece of equipment is a Ladder’s Little Helper, which holds your ladder steady and stops your ladder from scratching the gutter. You can buy this from most hardware outlets.
Step 2. Clear the gutters of rubbish and debris
With your gloves on and one hand on the ladder start to remove any rubbish and put it in the bucket which is hanging from the ladderlimb. Use your scraper if the debris is sticking or the gap between the gutter and tiles is too narrow. Once all of the bigger stuff is removed, you can give the gutter a good sweep with the brush. Keep moving your ladder along and emptying your bucket as you go.
Step 3. Clear out the smaller debris
Once you have removed all of the bigger debris you may find there is still some smaller stuff left behind. You can wait until the next rain or you can attach your hose to a gutter cleaning attachment and wash it away.
You will find that by cleaning your gutters regularly you will have fewer problems with any water overflowing onto your patio or into your home.
If your gutter is still overflowing after a clean then you may find your downpipe is blocked. The best way to clean your downpipe is to get a hose and a high pressured nozzle. Put the hose down the downpipe to clean it out. If you find it is still blocked you may have to dismantle it to see if there is anything clogged inside.
If all else fails, it may be time to call out an expert.

Well I am here to answer all of these questions for you.
At Additions Building Company we work with two types of roof sheeting, insulated and single skin. There are benefits to both styles but what it ultimately comes down to is personal preference and how much you are hoping to spend.
Insulated – Insulated roof sheeting comes in two different styles, a ribbed profile and a corrugated profile. I recommend choosing a profile and a colour that suits your existing house roof. Insulated roofing keeps your patio are cool and minimises any noise from rain or storms. The insulation will not just benefit your patio area but will also benefit your house by cooling down the area in which it is attached. I find this is great for people who have a living area that may get belted by the sun.
Insulated roof sheets also span a greater distance therefor minimising the amount of posts needed and allowing more room to entertain. These roof sheets also allow for concealed electrical work meaning you wont see any messy cables for lights and fans.
V-Line Single Skin – V-line single skin roofing is a cost effective way to add a stylish patio roof to your home. It has a high gloss finish giving it a modern appearance.

Choosing a Builder
Often this can be the hardest part. My advice to clients looking for a roofing expert is to look at their client reviews. Ask for the last three client phone numbers of recent work and find out from the client if they were easy to communicate with and whether they were happy with the work. Don’t always go for the cheapest quote as the cheapest quote can sometimes mean a cheap job or an unfinished job. Ask lots of questions like, is my stormwater being connected for this price? Will a certifier come out and give me a final certificate? Often clients can go with a builder without realising they were only doing half the work. Always check their QBCC Licence before signing a contract. If you have any questions phone QBCC. Make sure you can communicate easily with the salesperson and ask if they are a builder themselves. If the salesperson is a builder it generally means they know what they are talking about, they understand the building codes and they are more likely to add any extra touches to make your patio great.

If you live in Queensland then you know the entertaining season is well and truly upon us but if you are an entertainer who has a neglected deck, then you might want to get it into shape.
Getting your deck looking good before your guests arrive doesn’t have to be as difficult or expensive as it sounds and maintaining your deck regularly will not only make your deck look better all year round but it will also prolong the life of your deck saving you money on replacing decking.
Tools required for cleaning and oiling your deck
Hard bristled broom
Laundry washing power
A bucket of warm water
Hose
A good quality decking oil that your budget allows

How to oil a deck in seven easy steps
1. Clear the decks! Before starting your cleaning project, insure all furniture has been removed from your deck.
2. Wash it. With your broom remove any loose material from between the boards, give the deck a really good sweep. Mix your laundry washing powder in a bucket of warm water and scrub the deck with the broom. Rinse thoroughly with a hose.
3. Ensure it’s completely dry. Once you washed the deck, go make yourself a cup of tea and wait for it to completely dry. This is an essential part of oiling your deck as the oil wont be as effective on damp boards.
4. Plan it. When the deck is dry, the next step in your deck maintenance is to map out where you will start and where you will finish applying the oil. This means less waste as you won’t go over areas where oil has already been applied.
5. Apply deck oil in long strokes. After stirring the deck oil, start applying it. A long, continuous application will ensure the best finish so don’t make stabbing thrusts when applying. Leave to dry.
6. Second Coat. The final step involves applying a second coat. Always use less oil on the second coat as excess oil may pool and leave a mess – a real trick for people learning how to oil a deck!

Why do I need council approval?
All class 10a structures must meet the standards of the Building Code of Australia. By getting a council approval it means the relevant building surveyor has approved all the plans and documentation to say your new patio or carport Brisbane is being built to the legal standard.
